The Glasgow Four

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, The Glasgow Four.
The Scottish Musical Review,
 1896. (Process & Skills. 2017)

Looking at the above artworks its safe to say that Art Nouveau and Beggarstaff gave birth to the type of style the Glasgow Four did, basically Art Nouveau and Beggarstaff are the main influences of the Glasgow-4's style of art. Like Art Nouveau artists The Glasgow Four used a lot of flowy lines, floral-organic and geometric forms, they also used flat solid colours (Process & Skills. 2017).

Derrick Strawcastle, Untitled 2016, (Derrick Strawcastle. 2017)

Similar to the Glasgow Four, Derrick's main attraction is a female figure (as shown in the figure above), he also uses a lot of line work, flat solid colours and heavy strokes/outlines. Even though the figure is still, with the flow of the lines Derrick makes the figure look like it is in motion for the viewer's eye, the same effect one got from the Glasgow Four.  But compared to the Glasgow four he uses ink instead of paint.

Viennese Secession

Gustav Klimt, Kunstavsstellvng 1898.

Since the Viennese Secession represented a protest against traditional art, from the above image Gustav subliminally illustrates that protest with the use of minimalism (leaves a lot of open space on the canvas), this was during his time a technique that was unorthodox.

Frédéric Forest, Woman Standing

Gustav Klimt paved the way for artists like Frederic Forest, if you look at the Gustav artwork above and also the Forest artwork one can see that, Forest's artwork is minimalism taken to the extreme in comparison to the Gustav artwork.

  1. Thank you for your submission. You did not have to discuss both the Glasgow School and the Vienna Secession, you could choose between the two. Your discussions of both the movements as well as both the contemporary examples are too short, you don’t fully engage with any of them and you could have said a lot more
